What you need for a freerunning competition
A freerunning competition needs more than obstacles and crash mats. You will also need clear course marking, timing and judging supplies, competitor identification, power for event equipment, and practical items for officials and spectators. This shopping list covers equipment such as freerun boxes, parkour rails, bars, ropes, cones and non-slip mats, plus tables, barriers and printing supplies. Check quantities against your venue, competitor numbers and the number of competition areas before ordering.

Tips
- Plan the safety equipment around the course layout, not just the obstacle count. Use crash mats, gym mats and rubber non-slip mats wherever athletes land, dismount or move between obstacles, and check that every mat is available before setup day.
- Prepare one judging and timing station for each active competition area. Allow at least one stopwatch, whistle and set of jury forms per station, with spare pens and printed run sheets ready before the first athlete arrives.
- Order competitor identification early. Sort bib numbers and wristbands at least 24 hours before registration opens so missing entries or duplicate numbers can be corrected without holding up check-in.
- Check power requirements before bringing laptops, tablets, a printer and portable speakers to the venue. Take enough extension cords and power strips for separate judging, registration and announcement points, and tape down cables where people walk.
- Buy or collect crowd-management and weather items before event week. Barriers, party tents, clothes racks, tables and chairs are easy to forget, but they affect registration, spectator flow and whether equipment stays dry.
Frequently asked questions
- How much freerunning equipment do I need for a competition?
- Start with one complete obstacle setup per competition area, then add spare cones, marking hoops and line marking tape for boundaries and rerouting. For safety, provide enough crash mats and gym mats to cover every landing zone rather than estimating by athlete numbers.
- How many judges and stopwatches are needed for a freerunning competition?
- Use the number of active competition areas as your baseline: assign at least one judge and one stopwatch per area, plus a lead official for the event. Keep one spare stopwatch available in case a device fails or a timing station is split.
- When should I order prizes, medals and bib numbers?
- Order prizes, medals, bib numbers and wristbands at least 2β3 weeks before the competition. Sort the bibs and match them to the start list no later than the day before the event.
- What should I bring for registration and judging?
- Bring a laptop or tablet, printer, extension cords, power strips, printed jury forms, run sheets, bib numbers and wristbands. Pack these supplies at least one day ahead, and keep a paper copy of the start list in case the venue internet or equipment fails.
