What to Bring to a Field Hockey Tournament
A field hockey tournament needs more than goals, balls and team kits. You also need practical supplies for referees, scorekeeping, changing areas, catering, first aid and clear team identification. This shopping list brings those details together so you can check what must be bought, collected or packed before the first match. Pay particular attention to consumables, spare equipment and weather protection: these are often arranged too late.

Tips
- Plan one clearly marked equipment area and keep spare hockey balls, a ball pump and spare pump needles there. A missing needle or underinflated ball can delay several matches.
- Prepare referee and scorekeeping supplies before the schedule is final. Set aside whistles, referee cards, stopwatches, clipboards and scoreboards so officials do not have to share equipment between fields.
- Allow enough seating and shelter for teams waiting between matches. Benches, folding chairs, party tents and clothes racks are easy to overlook when the focus is on the playing fields.
- Keep drinks and snacks cold from arrival until the final match. Use coolers and thermos flasks, and serve refreshments with reusable cups, plates and cutlery rather than discovering at the venue that tableware is missing.
- Pack first aid kits and ice packs where volunteers and the first aid contact can reach them quickly. Put medals and cups in a separate labelled box so prizes are not mixed with field equipment during setup.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a field hockey tournament?
- At minimum, prepare hockey goals, hockey balls, whistles, referee cards, vests, cones, stopwatches and scoreboards. Also bring a ball pump, spare pump needles, field markings and barrier tape, plus first aid kits and ice packs.
- How many hockey balls should I bring to a tournament?
- Bring at least 2 balls per playing field for active use and add 2 to 4 spare balls for the tournament. Check them before the first match and keep the spares with the pump and spare needles.
- What catering supplies are needed for a hockey tournament?
- Prepare coolers for cold drinks, thermos flasks and coffee machines for hot drinks, and reusable cups, plates and cutlery for serving. Check dietary requirements before shopping and finish the main shopping at least 1 day before the tournament.
- What should I pack for tournament first aid?
- Pack at least 1 first aid kit and several ice packs for each tournament site, depending on the number of fields and the venueβs own medical provision. Confirm the first aid contact no later than 1 week before the event and keep the supplies accessible throughout the day.
