What you need for a DJ workshop

A DJ workshop needs more than controllers and laptops. You’ll need one complete workstation per group, reliable connections between the equipment, and enough power, cables and headphones to keep everyone working at once. Plan drinks, snacks and tableware for the full participant list, not just the people who registered first. Check software access and save music files offline before the workshop, because missing licenses or a weak internet connection can stop a session before it starts.

Tips

  • Prepare one laptop, DJ controller, headphone setup and software license for each workstation or group. Keep at least one USB stick available for moving music files or making a backup.
  • Count power strips and extension cords by workstation, then add one spare of each. Label cables before setup; XLR, RCA, jack and USB cables are not interchangeable.
  • Bring active speakers for the main sound and monitor speakers where participants need close audio feedback. Test every station with its own headphones, cables and power supply before participants arrive.
  • Use cable ties, cable trays and gaffer tape to secure leads across worktables and walkways. Leave enough cable length for laptop stands and controllers without pulling connectors loose.
  • Buy drinks and snacks for the confirmed participant list and include dietary requirements. Chill drinks in advance, and set out reusable cups, plates, cutlery, serving bowls and platters before the workshop begins.

Frequently asked questions

How many DJ controllers and laptops do I need for a DJ workshop?
Plan one controller and one laptop for each workstation or group. If two people share a station, confirm that the format allows them to take turns without extending the schedule.
How many headphones are needed for a DJ workshop?
Provide one pair of headphones per active workstation, plus at least one spare pair for the teacher or a faulty set. Test every pair with the assigned controller before the workshop.
What cables should I buy for a DJ workshop?
Prepare the required XLR, RCA, jack and USB cables for every connection, plus one spare cable of each type. Add power strips and extension cords for every workstation and check compatibility before the event day.
When should I prepare the music files and software?
Save the music files offline and verify the DJ software licenses at least one day before the workshop. Do not wait until setup, when missing access or downloads can delay every station.
