What to Buy and Bring for a Cyclocross Race
A cyclocross race needs more than bikes and a marked course. You will need equipment for barriers, rider numbers, timing, announcements, repairs, parking and volunteer work, plus shelter, lighting and refreshments. Plan purchases around the number of riders, officials and volunteers, then add backups for anything that could stop the race if it fails. This list helps you check the practical items before shopping and collecting equipment.

Tips
- Prepare one bib number and holder for every registered rider, then print at least 5% extra for late changes, damaged numbers or replacements. Keep the final rider list and start documents together with the spare numbers.
- Count course barriers, cones, marker poles and barrier tape from the course map rather than guessing. Pack a separate repair kit with spare inner tubes, a pump, tools and spare wheels so mechanical problems do not delay starts.
- Reserve timing equipment, transponders, the laptop, tablets and printer early enough to test them together at the venue. Bring power banks, extension cords and power strips, and test the full setup at least one day before the race.
- Plan refreshments for the actual headcount of riders, judges, timekeepers and volunteers. Chill drinks before the event and prepare snacks where they can be reached quickly without blocking registration or the finish area.
- Do not leave shelter and lighting until race morning. Set aside party tents, tables, chairs, work lights and LED lamps for registration, officials and bike support, and check that every powered item has a safe cable route.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a cyclocross race?
- You need course barriers, cones, marker poles and barrier tape, plus bib numbers, holders, timing equipment and transponders. Also prepare repair tools, pumps, spare inner tubes, announcements equipment, power supplies, shelter and lighting.
- How many spare bib numbers should I print for a cyclocross race?
- Print one for each registered rider and add at least 5% spare numbers. For 100 riders, that means 105 numbers, with holders ready for the replacements.
- When should I prepare the cyclocross race equipment?
- Reserve specialist equipment and suppliers as soon as the date and venue are confirmed. Test timing, printing, power and the PA system at least one day before the race, then collect and check course equipment before setup starts.
- What should I bring for bike repairs at a cyclocross race?
- Bring at least one bike pump, one tool case and spare inner tubes, plus spare wheels and maintenance stands if riders will receive support. For a small race, prepare one complete repair station for every 50 to 75 riders.
