Cycle Race Shopping List
A cycle race needs more than bikes and a start line. Youβll need equipment for marking the route, directing traffic, handling registrations, supporting riders, and managing the finish area. Plan refreshments, power, printing, and spare repair supplies early because these are easy to overlook and difficult to replace on race day. Use this list alongside your event plan, then match quantities to the number of riders, volunteers, course points, and expected spectators.

Tips
- Allow at least one route sign or arrow for every decision point, plus a small reserve for damaged or missing signs. Place cones and crowd barriers where riders, vehicles, and spectators could cross paths.
- Prepare one bike pump, tool set, and several spare inner tubes at the start area and at any staffed support point. Check that the tubes match the tyre sizes used by registered riders before race day.
- Plan one reusable cup per expected drink service at a minimum, then add a reserve of 10β15% for loss or extra demand. Fill coolers shortly before the start so drinks remain cold without creating a queue.
- Bring a printer, laptop or tablet, extension cords, power strips, and power banks for registration and start-list changes. Test the printer and charge every device the day before, not when riders are arriving.
- Give each traffic controller a walkie-talkie if the course is spread out, and keep one spare unit available. A megaphone helps at the start and finish, while work lights are needed if setup or pack-down continues in low light.
Frequently asked questions
- How many cycle race signs do I need?
- Count every turn, junction, hazard, and route split, then add 10β15% spare arrows and signs. A route with 20 decision points should therefore have roughly 22β23 marked sign positions available.
- How many spare inner tubes should I buy for a cycle race?
- Start with at least one spare inner tube for every 10 registered riders, with a minimum of 5 tubes for a small race. Buy additional sizes if riders use different wheel or tyre standards.
- How many reusable cups are needed for a cycle race?
- Prepare at least one cup per expected drink service, plus 10β15% extra. For 100 riders and two planned services, that means at least 220 cups if cups are not collected and washed between services.
- When should I prepare the cycle race equipment?
- Check and test equipment at least 24 hours before the race. Print race numbers and start lists in advance, charge radios and tablets overnight, and fill coolers close to the start time.
