What you need for a climbing competition

A climbing competition needs more than routes and prizes. You will need enough safety equipment for the planned categories, clearly marked scoring materials, and a reliable setup for registration and results. Tables, chairs, tablets or laptops, printers, and power supplies keep the event moving between climbing sessions. Check quantities against your participant limit and starter groups before buying, especially for harnesses, helmets, ropes, crash mats, bib numbers, and score sheets.

Tips

  • Count safety equipment by active climber, not by total registrations. Before ordering, confirm how many participants can climb at the same time and keep spare harnesses, helmets, carabiners, and security devices available.
  • Prepare one registration station for each busy arrival point. Each station needs a table, seating, a device for the participant list, and access to a printer or printed bib numbers so queues do not delay the first start group.
  • Bring more power accessories than you expect to use. Pack extension cords, power strips, charging adapters, and at least one power bank for every critical tablet or phone used for registration, judging, or results.
  • Organize scoring materials by route or category before the competition day. Put route maps, route arrows, score sheets, climbing chalk, chalk bags, and brushes into labeled storage crates so volunteers can find them quickly.
  • Do not leave presentation supplies until the final week. Order prizes, certificates, bib numbers, and scoreboards early enough to correct names, categories, or quantities before the participant list is closed.

Frequently asked questions

How many climbing harnesses and helmets do I need for a competition?
Plan one correctly sized harness and one helmet for every participant who may climb in the same session. Add at least 10% spare equipment, with a minimum of two extra sets for a small competition.
How much climbing chalk should I buy for a climbing competition?
Provide one chalk bag per active climber and keep at least 10% extra bags available. The amount of loose chalk depends on use, but one refill per chalk bag is a practical starting point for a single-day event.
How many score sheets and bib numbers should I prepare?
Prepare one bib number for every registered participant, plus 5% spare numbers for replacements. Print at least one score sheet per participant per scored category, and bring 10 extra sheets for corrections or damaged copies.
When should I order prizes and print certificates for a climbing competition?
Order prizes at least 3 to 4 weeks before the event and check the quantities against the participant limit. Print certificates after registrations close and the categories are confirmed, ideally 3 to 5 days before competition day.
