What you need for a climbing challenge
A climbing challenge needs more than walls and ropes. You will also need enough helmets, harnesses and crash mats for the participant flow, plus route maps, bib numbers and scorekeeping supplies. Plan separate equipment for climbing, registration, safety and refreshments so nothing is still being collected when the venue opens. Check every item against your route plan and participant count before shopping.

Tips
- Count climbing harnesses, helmets and bib numbers against your confirmed participants, then add a small reserve for damaged items or late registrations. Size equipment for the largest starter group, not only the total number of climbers.
- Keep crash mats under every bouldering section and use barrier tape and cones to separate climbing zones from registration and waiting areas. Check the full safety setup before participants arrive, rather than while groups are already climbing.
- Prepare one route map stand for each active zone and print enough score sheets for every starter group, with spare copies for corrections. Laminate route maps if they will be handled outdoors or near drinks.
- Set up registration with a table, chairs, bib numbers and scoreboards before opening the venue. Put stopwatches and pens at each scoring point so guides do not have to share one set between routes.
- Bring reusable cups and coffee cups based on the expected attendance, and provide a clear place for used cups and waste bins. Order catering early enough to confirm dietary requirements before the event day.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a climbing challenge?
- You need climbing walls or boulder blocks, crash mats, ropes where required, harnesses, helmets, carabiners and a climbing route set. Add route maps, bib numbers, scoreboards and stopwatches for running the challenge.
- How many climbing harnesses and helmets do I need?
- Prepare one correctly sized harness and one helmet for every person climbing in the largest active group, then keep a few spare sizes available. Do not base the quantity only on total attendance if groups climb in rotations.
- What should I buy for climbing challenge registration?
- Set aside at least one registration table, chairs, bib numbers, participant information, score sheets and writing supplies. Have the registration area ready before the venue opens so confirmed participants can be checked in without delaying starter groups.
- When should I order prizes and catering for a climbing challenge?
- Order trophies, medals and certificates early enough to check names and quantities before printing or delivery. Confirm catering after registration closes, ideally several days before the event, so dietary requirements and final portions can be handled.
