What you need for a children’s cancer walk
A children’s cancer walk needs more than water and a marked route. You’ll need supplies for registration, donations, route control, communication, first aid support and a clear start and finish area. Plan quantities around your number of registered walkers, volunteers and the length of the event. The easiest items to forget are power supplies, weather protection, extra route signs and equipment for handling late registrations or payments.

Tips
- Plan two to three drinks per participant for the first hour, then add more for warm weather or a longer route. Bring coolers and reusable cups to keep the water stand supplied throughout the walk.
- Prepare one registration place for every 50 to 75 participants expected at the busiest time. Each place needs a table, a laptop or payment terminal where required, and clear course maps or participant information.
- Mark every turn with route signs and arrow stickers, and keep spare signs available for last-minute changes. Cones and barrier tape should cover the start, finish, crossings and any areas where walkers must not enter.
- Allow one fully charged power bank for each laptop, payment terminal or communication device used away from a power outlet. Pack extension cords and power strips for the registration and announcements area, but keep cables out of walking paths.
- Set aside a communication kit for route staff: one walkie-talkie per key post, plus a megaphone at the start and finish. Give volunteers a printed route map and the event schedule before they take their positions.
Frequently asked questions
- How much water do I need for a children’s cancer walk?
- Plan at least two to three drinks per participant for the first hour. Add extra stock for hot weather, a route lasting more than two hours, or a remote water stand that cannot be replenished quickly.
- How many registration tables do I need for a charity walk?
- Use one registration table for every 50 to 75 participants expected during the busiest 30-minute period. Add a separate table for late registrations, donations or payment questions if those processes are handled on site.
- How many route signs should I buy for a walking event?
- Place a sign at every turn, crossing and decision point, then buy at least 10% extra for replacements or route changes. Check the route on foot before the event and keep spare arrow stickers with the route team.
- When should I buy supplies for a children’s cancer walk?
- Buy non-perishable items such as route signs, cones, barrier tape and power banks at least two weeks before the walk. Check drinks, cups, first-aid arrangements and weather protection again three to five days beforehand.
