Ceramics workshop checklist
A ceramics workshop needs more than clay and a good instructor. You need to secure a suitable venue, confirm the teaching and firing arrangements, manage registrations, and prepare each workstation before participants arrive. This checklist covers the full sequence, from booking the room and ordering materials to labeling finished projects and arranging refreshments. Use it to keep the practical details on track, especially the kiln booking, ventilation, power access, and participant information that are easy to leave until the last minute.

Tips
- Book the kiln firing as soon as the workshop date is fixed. Firing usually happens after the session, so confirm where projects go, how they are labeled, and when they can be collected.
- Plan the room around workstations rather than just seating. Allow space for work tables, chairs, clay, tools, turntables, and safe movement between each station.
- Prepare and portion the clay before participants arrive. Set out the tools, rollers, sponges, modeling knives, and worksheets so the instructor does not lose workshop time distributing equipment.
- Check ventilation and power before setup. Kettles, a coffee maker, extension cords, and power strips can create awkward or unsafe cable runs if their positions are decided on the day.
- Label every project immediately after the workshop. Match each piece to the participant list before it goes for firing; unlabeled clay work is difficult to identify once several projects are together.
Frequently asked questions
- How far in advance should I book a ceramics workshop venue?
- Book the venue at least 4 to 6 weeks before the workshop, especially if you need work tables, good ventilation, and access to power. Confirm setup and cleanup time as part of the booking.
- How much clay do I need per person for a ceramics workshop?
- Set aside around 1 to 2 kg of modeling clay per participant, depending on the project and whether leftovers can be reused. Portion it before the session so everyone can begin at the same time.
- When should I reserve the ceramic kiln firing?
- Reserve firing when you confirm the workshop date, and no later than 2 weeks beforehand. Ask about the kiln’s capacity, drying time, labeling system, and the expected collection date.
- How early should I set up a ceramics workshop?
- Allow at least 90 minutes before participants arrive. Use that time to ventilate the room, arrange tables and chairs, create workstations, lay out materials, chill drinks, and post the safety instructions.
