What to bring to a carp competition

A carp competition needs more than rods and bait. You need a reliable weigh-in setup, safe fish-handling equipment, clear registration materials and enough shelter, food and lighting for the full event. Use this shopping list alongside the plan to check what must be bought, borrowed or packed before competitors arrive. The items below cover the fishing stations, central administration and refreshments, including the equipment that is often remembered only when the first fish is ready to weigh.

Tips

  • Pack one landing net, unhooking mat, weighing bag and carp care kit for each active fishing station, plus at least one complete spare set for equipment failure.
  • Prepare enough bait for the entire competition before arrival and portion it into separate bait buckets. Keep a reserve portion aside rather than relying on a last-minute shop run.
  • Use at least two weighing setups if several catches may arrive together: each needs a calibrated scale, weighing stand and weighing bag. Bring measuring tapes for checks and tie-break situations.
  • Plan shelter and seating for registration and the weigh-in, not only for spectators. Put waterproof storage boxes beside the tables for cards, permits and other paperwork that must stay dry.
  • For a full-day event, provide roughly 2–3 drinks per person during the first hour and continue with about 1 drink per person every hour after that. Chill drinks in coolers and keep hot drinks available in thermos flasks.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a carp competition?
Bring carp rods, rod pods, bite alarms, landing nets, unhooking mats, weighing bags, fish scales, weighing stands, measuring tapes and carp care kits. Allow one complete fish-handling set per active station, plus at least one spare set.
How much bait should I buy for a carp competition?
Calculate bait for every registered angler and the full fishing period, then add a reserve of about 10–15%. Portion it before the event so distribution is quick and competitors do not share unlabelled containers.
How many scales and weighing bags are needed?
Use one calibrated scale and one weighing bag for each weighing station. If catches may arrive at the same time, prepare at least two stations and keep one spare weighing bag available.
How much food and drink do I need for the competition?
For drinks, plan 2–3 per person in the first hour and about 1 per person per hour afterwards. Buy food for the confirmed participant count plus roughly 10% extra, and keep refreshments chilled until serving.
