What to Bring for a BMX Tour Ride
A BMX tour ride needs more than bikes and helmets. You will need clearly marked routes, repair supplies, communication equipment and a safe, visible start area. Plan drinks and reusable tableware for the group, plus spare equipment for riders who arrive without the right gear. The quantities below should be adjusted to your participant count, route length and number of traffic marshals.

Tips
- Prepare one route arrow for every major turn, plus a few spare arrows, and use traffic cones or barrier tape where riders could take a wrong line. Put the signs out before registration opens so the route is checked in daylight.
- Keep at least one bike pump, one bike tool kit and several spare inner tubes at the start area. Tire levers and cable ties are easy to overlook but can solve small problems without stopping the ride.
- Provide one reflective vest and one whistle for each traffic marshal, then add flashlights if any part of the ride may run in low light. Give marshals walkie-talkies when they are spread along the route.
- Set aside spare helmets and bicycles before participants arrive, rather than trying to find replacements during registration. Check every BMX bike and helmet before the first rider leaves.
- For a large group, plan a separate registration table, bicycle racks and drink station so queues do not block the start. Fill coolers shortly before the ride and allow roughly two to three drinks per person for the first hour.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a BMX tour ride?
- Plan for BMX bikes, helmets, route arrows, cones, repair tools, spare inner tubes and first aid kits. For communication and crowd control, add reflective vests, whistles, walkie-talkies and barriers based on the number of marshals and participants.
- How many spare BMX bikes and helmets should I bring?
- Bring at least one spare bike and two spare helmets for a small ride, then add roughly one spare bike and helmet set for every 20 to 30 riders. Keep them at the registration or start area so they can be checked out quickly.
- How much water and how many cups do I need for a BMX ride?
- Plan at least two to three drinks per person for the first hour, with extra supplies for warm weather or a longer route. Bring one reusable cup per participant plus around 10% extra for replacements and late arrivals.
- When should I prepare the BMX ride shopping list?
- Check the main equipment at least one week before the ride and buy consumables three to five days beforehand. Recheck bikes, helmets, route markers, repair parts and first aid supplies on the day before setup.
