What to buy for an archery competition
An archery competition needs more than bows and targets. You will need clearly marked shooting areas, spare equipment, scorekeeping supplies, safety barriers, refreshments and practical items for registration and announcements. Plan quantities around the number of archers, then add backups for anything that could stop a round if it breaks or goes missing. Check power, lighting and weather protection before shopping, especially for an outdoor competition.

Tips
- Provide one scorecard per participant per scoring round, plus at least 10% extra for damaged or misplaced cards. Keep pens, clipboards and the participant list together at the registration desk.
- Have at least one spare bow and a reserve supply of arrows available for every shooting group. Add a bow maintenance set, spare tendon and arrow search flags so minor problems do not delay the schedule.
- Use enough bollards and barrier tape to create a clearly visible safety zone around the range. Mark the firing direction and shooting line before participants arrive, not while the first group is waiting.
- Plan two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then one drink per person for each additional hour. Add easy-to-serve snacks and keep chilled drinks in a location volunteers can reach without crossing the shooting area.
- For an outdoor event, reserve party tents and covers for registration, scoring and refreshments. Pack extension cords, power strips and LED lamps in advance; string lights are useful around tables, but never substitute for clear range lighting.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for an archery competition?
- Plan bows, competition arrows, target faces, goal suits, stands, quivers, armguards and finger protectors for each shooting group. Add at least one spare bow, spare arrows and basic bow maintenance equipment so a broken item does not stop a round.
- How many arrows should I buy for an archery competition?
- Prepare enough competition arrows for every archer in the largest shooting group, then add at least 10% spare arrows. For example, 30 archers shooting six arrows each need 180 competition arrows, plus 18 or more spares.
- What safety supplies are needed for an outdoor archery event?
- Use bollards, barrier tape, shooting-line marking, arrow search flags and start-and-stop signals. Set up the safety zone before registration and keep a megaphone available so commands can be heard across the range.
- How much food and drink do I need for an archery competition?
- Allow two to three drinks per person for the first hour and one additional drink per person for every later hour. Buy enough snacks for the full event duration, and chill the drinks before participants arrive rather than during setup.
