What you need for an ALS Walk

A well-prepared ALS Walk needs more than drinks and route markers. You will need supplies for registration, route guidance, rest stops, volunteers, refreshments and changing weather. Plan the quantities around your number of participants, then add a small reserve for lost bibs, extra cups and unexpected delays. This checklist also covers the items that are easy to arrange too late, such as power access, first aid supplies and clearly visible route signs.

Tips

  • Prepare one starter pack per participant, including a bib number and wristband, then keep at least 5% extra supplies for late registrations or replacements.
  • For the registration area, allow one clipboard and a printed participant list for each volunteer handling check-in. Set up the tables and chairs before participants arrive.
  • Place route arrows and cones at every turn, crossing and unclear section. Recheck the full route shortly before the walk, because signs can be moved or overlooked.
  • Plan refreshments for the rest stop before shopping: provide reusable cups, coffee or tea equipment, coolers and thermos flasks, and bring extra drinking water if the route is exposed or warm.
  • Check power and lighting at least one day in advance. Extension cords, power strips and LED lamps are easy to forget, while a portable sound system or megaphone may be needed for instructions at the start and finish.

Frequently asked questions

What should I buy for an ALS Walk?
Plan supplies for registration, route marking, refreshments, safety and cleanup. The core list includes bib numbers, wristbands, route arrows, cones, volunteer vests, first aid kits, reusable cups, tables, chairs and waste bins.
How many extra ALS Walk supplies should I buy?
Buy at least 5% extra bib numbers, wristbands and cups beyond the confirmed participant count. For a group of 100 walkers, that means 5 additional sets; increase the reserve if registration remains open until the event day.
When should I prepare the ALS Walk shopping list?
Finalize the shopping list at least 7 days before the walk, once registrations and dietary requirements are known. Check non-food equipment, power access and safety supplies again 1 day before setup.
What do I need for an ALS Walk rest stop?
Set aside tables, chairs, reusable cups, coffee pots, kettles and thermos flasks for the rest stop, plus coolers and waste bins. Prepare enough serviceware for the full participant count and keep extra cups available for volunteers and replacements.
