Youth camp shopping list
A youth camp needs more than tents and sleeping bags. Plan sleeping equipment for every participant, a separate setup for cooking and eating, and enough chilled storage for the meal plan. Shared items such as gas burners, tables, reusable plates and water jugs are easy to underestimate because they are not packed by each camper. Check what you already own before shopping, then adjust quantities to the participant list, camp duration and weather forecast.

Tips
- Count one sleeping place, sleeping bag and sleeping mat or air mattress per participant, plus a small reserve of at least two sleeping places for late changes or damaged gear.
- For a group meal, plan cooking equipment around the menu: use at least two gas burners for larger groups, and check that you have enough gas cylinders for every cooking day before departure.
- Allow one reusable plate, bowl, cup and cutlery set per person, then add 10% extra so a dropped or dirty item does not stop the meal service.
- Use coolers for food that must stay chilled and separate them from drinks where possible. Prepare at least two water jugs and enough thermos flasks for the planned hot drinks and activity breaks.
- Pack power banks, extension cords and the mobile phone with the emergency contacts and attendance list available offline. Restock the first-aid kit before leaving, rather than discovering missing supplies at camp.
Frequently asked questions
- How many sleeping bags do I need for a youth camp?
- Plan one sleeping bag for every participant and supervisor who sleeps at camp. Add two spare sleeping bags for a group of up to 20 people, or about 10% extra for a larger group.
- How much camping tableware should I buy for a youth camp?
- Provide one reusable plate, bowl, cup and cutlery set per person, plus 10% extra. For 30 participants, that means 33 of each shared eating item where practical.
- How many gas burners are needed for a youth camp?
- Use two gas burners for a group cooking one-pot meals or simple dishes, and three or more if several pans must be used at the same time. Check fuel supplies at least 3 days before departure.
- When should I buy food for a youth camp?
- Buy shelf-stable food 2 to 3 days before camp and chilled food as close to departure as possible, preferably within 24 hours. Confirm dietary requirements before finalising the quantities.
