Windsurfing competition checklist: plan it in the right order

A windsurfing competition needs more than a course and a start line. You must secure the venue, permits and insurance first, then set the format, safety plan and weather procedure before inviting competitors. Registration, bib numbers, jury briefings and rescue routes need to be ready before race day. Use this checklist to coordinate the water, shore-based setup and event equipment without leaving critical decisions until the final week.

Tips

  • Start with the venue, permit and insurance checks before publishing anything. Allow at least 6–8 weeks for approvals and confirm whether Water Management needs to be informed separately.
  • Write the competition format and rules before opening registration. State the number of races, start procedure, finish area and cancellation criteria so every participant receives the same information.
  • Build the safety plan around the actual course. Agree the rescue route, position the lifeboat, and test walkie-talkies, life jackets, throw lines and the megaphone during a briefing before the first start.
  • Record a weather scenario and assign one person to monitor wind conditions with the anemometer. Set a clear decision deadline, such as 60 minutes before the planned start, for postponement or cancellation.
  • Finish the shore setup before competitors arrive. Put the registration desk, judges’ table, tents, power supplies, printer and bib numbers in place at least 90 minutes before registration opens, and keep spare sails, a spare boom and the repair kit accessible.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I organize a windsurfing competition?
Start planning at least 6–8 weeks before the event. Use that time for the venue, permit, insurance, safety plan, jury, rescue crew and participant registration.
What safety equipment is needed for a windsurfing race?
Plan for a lifeboat, life jackets, water sports helmets, life rings, throw lines, paddles and reliable walkie-talkies. Check every item before the safety briefing and keep a repair kit and spare equipment on shore.
When should windsurfing competition registration close?
Close registration 5–7 days before the competition if possible. You then have time to check participant details, collect dietary requirements, assign bib numbers and send the participant letter.
How early should the event site be set up on race day?
Begin setup at least 90 minutes before registration opens. The registration desk, judges’ table, tents, tables, start and finish lines, buoys, power supplies and communication equipment should be checked before competitors arrive.
