Walking Marathon Shopping List

Organising a walking marathon takes more than food and water at the finish. You need clear route markers, supplies for rest stops, safety equipment and a reliable check-in setup. This shopping list covers the practical items participants and volunteers use on the day, from bib numbers and kilometer markers to coolers, jerrycans and first aid kits. Check quantities against your participant count, route length and number of rest stops before ordering.

Tips

  • Plan water and refreshment supplies by rest stop, not just by total attendance. Coolers, jerrycans and tables need to reach every station, with extra capacity for the busiest first and final stops.
  • Order bib numbers, route maps and finish medals at least 2–3 weeks before the walk. Allow time to match numbers to registrations, print updated route information and assemble start packs.
  • Use route signs, arrows, kilometer markers, cones and parcours tape together. Place a spare set with the route team so damaged or missing markers can be replaced during the event.
  • Count safety vests by role rather than by volunteer total. Route marshals, first-aid staff and traffic controllers should be identifiable from a distance, especially at crossings and other marked hazards.
  • Prepare a separate emergency kit for each active area. First aid kits, plaster sets, CPR masks, thermal blankets, flashlights and walkie-talkies should not all be stored at the start or finish.

Frequently asked questions

How much water do I need for a walking marathon?
Calculate water for each rest stop based on your registered participant count, walking distance and weather forecast. Place the supply at least 1–2 days before the event so every station can be checked and replenished.
How many route signs do I need for a walking marathon?
The number depends on route length, turns and intersections, so count every decision point during a physical route check. Add roughly 10% spare arrows and signs, and sort them by route section before event morning.
When should I order walking marathon bib numbers and medals?
Order bib numbers and medals at least 2–3 weeks in advance. Close or freeze registration early enough to print correct participant details and prepare the start packs without last-minute changes.
What first aid equipment is needed for a walking marathon?
Provide first aid kits and plaster sets at the start, finish and staffed rest stops, with CPR masks and thermal blankets available to the medical team. Check all kits 1–2 days before the walk and replace anything expired or used.
