What to buy for a walking camp

A walking camp needs more than food and water. You also need practical supplies for registration, group control, route marking, weather changes and the finish point. Plan drinks and snacks for the full walking time, then add equipment that keeps groups visible and reachable. Chilled products, charged power banks and first aid supplies are easy to overlook, so gather them before departure day rather than during the event.

Tips

  • Plan at least 500–750 ml of water per participant for a short walk, and more for warm weather or longer routes. Keep extra drinks at the finish point and carry some with each group.
  • For a walk lasting several hours, allow one substantial snack per person plus a little extra for delays. Keep chilled food in coolers with ice cubes until serving.
  • Give each walking group a charged phone or power bank, route instructions and a way to stay visible. Reflective vests, flashlights or headlamps are especially useful when departure or arrival may run late.
  • Prepare the registration area before participants arrive: set out the registration desk, participant list, reusable cups and plates, and a waste bin. Pack a few spare pens and printed route information with these supplies.
  • Check the first aid kits, batteries and communication equipment at least one day beforehand. Bring more than one power bank and keep emergency contacts accessible to the group escorts.

Frequently asked questions

How much water do I need for a walking camp?
Allow 500–750 ml per participant for a shorter walk and at least 1 litre per person for a longer or warm-weather route. Add extra water at the start or finish for delays.
What food should I buy for a walking camp?
Buy one filling snack per participant, plus around 10% extra for late arrivals or unexpected delays. If you serve soup or another hot item, bring enough bowls, reusable cutlery and thermos flasks for the whole group.
When should I buy chilled food and drinks?
Buy chilled products no earlier than the day before, unless their expiry date allows longer storage. Put them in coolers with ice cubes on the event day and keep them cold until serving.
What safety equipment is needed for a walking camp?
Prepare at least one first aid kit and one charged phone or power bank for each walking group. Add reflective vests, flashlights or headlamps, spare batteries and route-marking equipment according to the route and expected light conditions.
