What you need for a volleyball tournament
A volleyball tournament needs more than balls and a net. You will need equipment for each court, supplies for referees and table officials, printed match information, refreshments, and practical items for players between games. This shopping list helps you check the details that are often forgotten, such as spare balls, extension cables, pens, team bibs and enough reusable cups. Match quantities to the number of courts, teams and expected playing hours before you shop.

Tips
- Plan one complete scoring set for every active court: a scoreboard, match forms, pens, a referee whistle and a referee chair. Add at least one spare pen set and several blank forms for mistakes or schedule changes.
- Keep at least one spare volleyball available for each tournament area, and place ball carts near the courts rather than in the storage room. Check that nets, posts, court marking tape and antennas are compatible before the event day.
- Prepare team bibs, player towels and sports bags before teams arrive. A clearly labelled place for each teamβs equipment reduces delays between matches and keeps balls and paperwork from being mixed up.
- Allow enough power access for the laptop, printer, sound system and microphones. Bring extension cables, power strips and power banks, and test the setup at least one day before the tournament.
- Buy refreshments according to the schedule, not just the number of players: active participants need drinks throughout the day. Chill drinks in advance, portion snacks before doors open and provide reusable cups at the serving point.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a volleyball tournament?
- For each active court, prepare a net, posts, volleyballs, court marking tape, a scoreboard, referee whistle, match forms and a referee chair. Keep at least one spare ball per tournament area and have cones available for directing teams and spectators.
- How many volleyballs do I need for a tournament?
- Use at least 2 volleyballs per active court so play can continue when one rolls away or needs checking. Add 1 spare ball for each tournament area, especially when several matches run at the same time.
- How many score sheets and pens should I buy?
- Prepare one match form for every scheduled match, plus 10% extra for errors or schedule changes. Put at least 2 pens at each scoring table and keep one spare pen set with the tournament desk.
- When should I buy and prepare tournament supplies?
- Buy non-perishable equipment and printed materials at least 7 days before the tournament. Chill drinks and portion snacks the day before, then check the nets, electronics, first-aid supplies and printed schedules during the final setup.
