What to Buy for a Volleyball Tournament
A volleyball tournament needs more than nets and balls. Plan equipment for every court, spares for damaged or missing items, and enough drinks and serving supplies for players, referees and volunteers. Check whether the sports hall provides posts, scoreboards, tables or chairs before buying or hiring anything. Use the final participant count and number of courts to set quantities, then complete non-perishable shopping several days before the tournament.

Tips
- Allow at least one match ball per court, plus two spare volleyballs for the tournament. Check the ball pressure the day before and pack a pump if one is not supplied.
- Prepare one scoring setup per court: a scoreboard, score sheets, pens and a whistle for the referee. Print team assignments and schedules before the event rather than relying on a phone.
- For refreshments, estimate two drinks per person for the first hour and one drink for each additional hour. Bring coolers and reusable drinking cups, and label water, coffee and other drinks clearly.
- Pack one first aid kit at the venue entrance and a second kit near the courts if the hall is large. Add knee pads only if players are expected to bring their own protective equipment.
- Count serving items against the full headcount, not just the teams: plates, coffee cups and reusable drinking cups are also needed by referees and volunteers. Add at least 10 percent extra to avoid running out.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a volleyball tournament?
- For each court, plan a volleyball net, posts, a match ball, a scoreboard, a refereeβs chair and a whistle. Add at least two spare balls, field marking tape, cones and one first aid kit for the venue.
- How many volleyballs do I need for a tournament?
- Use one match ball per active court and keep two spare balls available for the whole tournament. For example, three courts require three match balls plus two spares, or five balls total.
- How many drinks should I buy for a volleyball tournament?
- Budget two drinks per person for the first hour, then one additional drink per person for every extra hour. For 40 people at a four-hour tournament, that is about 200 drinks, with extra water for hot conditions.
- When should I buy supplies for a volleyball tournament?
- Buy non-perishable supplies three to five days beforehand and check the shopping list again the day before. Collect prizes, charge rechargeable lights and speakers, and confirm borrowed equipment at least 24 hours before start time.
