What you need for a survival run
A survival run needs more than obstacles and a start line. You will need clear route marking, participant identification, timing equipment, communication gear and supplies for volunteers and finishers. Plan materials by obstacle, then add a practical margin for damaged signs, missing equipment and changing weather. This checklist supports the shopping and collection phase, so you can see what must be bought, borrowed or prepared before race day.

Tips
- Count bib numbers and wristbands against the final registration list, then add at least 5% spare sets for replacements and late changes.
- Mark every junction and obstacle clearly: prepare route arrows, route signs, obstacle signs, cones and barrier tape before the course inspection, not on race morning.
- Allow one walkie-talkie for each key course position, plus at least two spare charged batteries or charging points for a full event day.
- Protect tents, tables and timing equipment with guy ropes and suitable covers, especially if the forecast includes wind or rain. Check the setup at least 24 hours beforehand.
- Prepare finish-line supplies separately from the start area: medals, the finish arch, speakers, microphone and a working time registration system should be checked and grouped together the day before.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a survival run?
- You need course-marking equipment, obstacle materials, participant items, timing equipment and communication gear. For the route, prepare cones, arrows, signs and barrier tape; for the event area, plan tables, tents, bib numbers, wristbands, stopwatches or a time registration system, and walkie-talkies.
- How many spare bib numbers and wristbands should I buy?
- Prepare one bib number and one wristband per registered participant, then add at least 5% spare sets. For 200 participants, that means 210 bib numbers and 210 wristbands.
- When should survival run equipment be checked?
- Check all materials at least 24 hours before the run, including obstacle parts, route signs, ropes, mats, timing equipment and radios. Charge batteries and sort starter packs the day before, leaving only final weather-related adjustments for race morning.
- How much route marking does a survival run need?
- Mark every turn, crossing, obstacle approach and exit, rather than relying on signs only at the start and finish. Walk the complete route once before race day and add spare arrows, cones and barrier tape for sections that may become unclear in mud or rain.
