What you need for a spring bike ride

A spring bike ride needs more than bikes and snacks. Plan food and drinks for the full group, plus supplies for changing weather, minor breakdowns and a clearly marked route. This shopping list covers the items to buy, pack or arrange before the ride, from reusable cups and coffee equipment to pumps, spare inner tubes and safety vests. Check quantities against your registration list, then add a small buffer for late arrivals and unexpected repairs.

Tips

  • Allow 2–3 drinks per person for the first hour, then about 1 drink per hour after that. Bring extra water as well as coffee and tea, especially if the route has no reliable refill point.
  • Plan 1 sandwich or equivalent snack per participant, plus roughly 10% extra. Wash fruit and vegetables before packing them, and keep sandwiches and drinks cool until the start or rest stop.
  • Pack at least 1 bike pump and 1 repair kit for every 15–20 riders, with spare inner tubes in the common wheel sizes used by the group. Check that the kits contain working tools before departure.
  • Use route arrows and route signs at every turn where a rider could hesitate, and keep traffic cones and safety vests for busy crossings or the start area. Print the participant list and emergency numbers before the day.
  • Prepare for a wet or late finish with party tents, coolers and charged communication equipment. Charge walkie-talkies and mobile chargers the day before, and bring extension cords only if the starting location has confirmed power access.
