What you need for a sport climbing competition

A sport climbing competition needs more than climbing walls and routes. Your shopping list must cover participant safety, route setting, scoring, registration, venue flow and basic catering. Check every harness, helmet, rope, carabiner and safety device before the event, and keep spare equipment available for damaged or missing items. Plan printing and power supplies early: starting lists, score sheets, tablets, laptops and extension leads are easy to overlook until registration opens.

Tips

  • Allow at least one harness, helmet and suitable safety setup for every climber using rented equipment, plus spare items for last-minute replacements. Inspect everything before the first starter group arrives.
  • Keep route-setting equipment separate from competitor equipment. Store climbing holds, hold-down bolts, Allen keys, toolboxes, dust goggles and route-building helmets together so route builders can start without searching.
  • Prepare printed route maps, directional signs, starting lists and score sheets at least one day before the competition. Print extra copies of each sheet in case of changes, damage or lost pages.
  • Count power points before bringing the printer, laptop, tablets, extension cords and power strips to the venue. Take at least one backup charging option if scoring or registration depends on electronic devices.
  • Arrange chilled catering storage before food arrives and confirm quantities against the participant and volunteer lists. Include a clear system for dietary requirements so meals are not mixed up during the busiest period.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a sport climbing competition?
You need climbing ropes, harnesses, helmets, safety devices, carabiners, safety ropes and mats, along with route-setting materials such as holds, bolts, brushes and tools. Add laptops or tablets, a printer, power supplies, route maps and directional signs for registration and scoring.
How many climbing harnesses and helmets should I buy?
Provide one correctly fitting harness and helmet for each person who will use event equipment at the same time. Add at least 10% spare capacity, with a minimum of one spare harness and one spare helmet for a small competition.
When should I print starting lists and score sheets?
Print the first set at least 24 hours before the competition, after participant registration and starter groups are confirmed. Keep 10% extra copies available for replacements and schedule changes.
What should I bring for route setting?
Bring climbing holds, hold-down bolts, climbing brushes, toolboxes, Allen keys, master keys, route maps, dust goggles and safety helmets for route construction. Have this equipment ready at least one day before route setting begins so missing tools do not delay the schedule.
