What to Bring on a Snorkeling Trip

A snorkeling trip needs more than masks and fins. Plan equipment for every participant, plus backup gear, flotation aids, clear safety supplies and a dry way to store phones and valuables. For a full day, bring coolers for food and drinks, reusable tableware and a simple serving setup. Check sizes and swimming experience before buying or packing anything, and prepare the equipment at least one day before departure so missing items can still be replaced.

Tips

  • Pack one properly fitted mask, snorkel and pair of fins per swimmer, then add at least 10% spare equipment for damaged, lost or poorly fitting items. Check every snorkel and mask before loading the vehicles.
  • Bring one wetsuit in the correct size for each swimmer who needs thermal protection. Keep life jackets, swimming rings and inflatable resting buoys available for weaker swimmers or anyone who needs a break.
  • Use one waterproof bag per participant for phones, keys and dry clothing, and keep waterproof phone cases ready before people enter the water. An underwater camera should be tested and charged the evening before.
  • Mark the swimming area with marker buoys and swimming zone lines before participants arrive. Pack whistles, rescue lines, life rings and a first aid kit where the group can reach them quickly, not buried under food or spare clothing.
  • For a full-day trip, plan roughly 2–3 drinks per person for the first hour and 1–2 drinks per person for each additional hour, with extra water in the coolers. Pack reusable plates, bowls, cups and cutlery, plus serving bowls, tongs and cutting boards for the food setup.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment does each person need for a snorkeling trip?
Plan one diving mask, snorkel and pair of swim fins per participant. Add a correctly sized wetsuit where needed and keep at least 10% spare masks, snorkels and fins for fit problems or breakage.
How many drinks should I bring for a snorkeling trip?
Allow 2–3 drinks per person for the first hour and 1–2 drinks per person for every additional hour. Bring extra drinking water, especially in warm weather, and keep everything chilled in coolers before loading.
What safety equipment do I need for group snorkeling?
Pack at least one first aid kit, life ring, rescue line and whistle for the group, with more equipment for larger groups or separate swimming areas. Use marker buoys and swimming zone lines to make the permitted area visible.
When should I check snorkeling equipment before the trip?
Check all equipment at least one day before departure, including mask seals, snorkel valves, fin straps, wetsuit sizes and flotation aids. Load backup equipment separately so it is easy to reach if something fails during the trip.
