Ski trip shopping list: what to pack and buy

A ski trip needs more than skis and warm clothes. Plan food and hot drinks for the time outdoors, plus reusable cups, bowls, cutlery and coolers for serving a group. Safety and navigation items such as helmets, goggles, reflective vests, route maps, whistles and walkie-talkies are easy to overlook. Check equipment reservations early, then shop and pack the shared supplies at least two days before departure so missing items can still be replaced.

Tips

  • Plan two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then one drink per person for each additional hour outside. Pack extra hot drinks in thermos flasks because cold conditions increase demand.
  • Reserve skis, poles and helmets as soon as registrations are confirmed, ideally at least two weeks before the trip. Keep guide equipment separate, including guide poles, whistles and walkie-talkies.
  • Pack one pair of goggles and one helmet per skier, plus reflective vests and bib numbers for every participant who needs to be identified on the route. Store these at the distribution point rather than in the transport luggage.
  • Prepare lunch and snacks before departure and use coolers for anything that must stay cold. Bring soup bowls, mugs, reusable cups, plates and cutlery sets based on the final participant count, plus at least 10% spare tableware.
  • Charge mobile phones and walkie-talkies the night before, and take power banks, mobile chargers, extension cords and power strips. Print route maps and pack a compass and flashlights even when the forecast is clear.

Frequently asked questions

What food and drinks do I need for a ski trip?
Plan lunch, snacks and at least two to three drinks per person for the first hour outdoors, followed by one drink per person per additional hour. Include hot drinks in thermos flasks and pack around 10% extra food for delays or larger portions.
How early should I reserve ski equipment?
Reserve cross-country skis, ski poles and helmets at least two weeks before the trip when possible. Confirm the reservation again after the final participant list and equipment requirements are known.
How many cups, bowls and plates should I pack?
Take one reusable cup, plate, soup bowl, mug and cutlery set per person, plus at least 10% spare. For 20 participants, that means 22 of each item where practical.
What safety equipment is needed for a group ski trip?
Pack one helmet and pair of goggles per skier, along with reflective vests, bib numbers, route maps, whistles and a compass. Give guides walkie-talkies and guide poles, and check all safety equipment no later than the day before departure.
