What you need for a skate competition

A skate competition needs more than boards and ramps. You will need a complete course setup, protective equipment, judging supplies, crowd control and reliable power for announcements. Plan quantities from your participant and spectator numbers, then check every rental and delivery at least one week before the event. Items such as bib numbers, cold packs, extension cords and warning signs are easy to overlook until setup has already started.

Tips

  • Prepare one bib number for every registered competitor, plus at least 10% extra for replacements. Keep the numbers together with the start list and match cards at registration.
  • Allow one judging card per scored run or heat, with spare cards for mistakes. Have at least two stopwatches available so timing can continue if one fails.
  • Set out one first aid kit and several cold packs beside the course, not in a locked storage area. Add warning signs and barrier tape before competitors arrive.
  • Match protective gear to the format and age range: helmets, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards should be available in multiple sizes. Count the largest expected group using the equipment at the same time.
  • Test the mixer, microphones, speakers, extension cords and power strips during setup. Bring at least 20% more cable length and spare power access than your first measurement suggests, especially if the course and audience are separated.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a skate competition?
Plan the course with skateboards, ramps, grind rails, a fun box, a quarter pipe and any stage sections required by the format. Add helmets, pads, bib numbers, judging cards, stopwatches and measuring tapes, then confirm quantities against the final participant list at least 7 days before the event.
How many skateboards and helmets do I need for a competition?
Provide one usable skateboard and one helmet per competitor who needs equipment at the same time, then add around 10% spare equipment. For example, 30 simultaneous competitors means planning for at least 33 boards and 33 helmets, subject to your competition format.
What safety supplies are needed for a skate competition?
Have at least one first aid kit, several cold packs, warning signs, barrier tape and crowd barriers ready at the course. Position them before opening and check the first aid supplies again on the morning of the competition.
What do I need for sound and announcements at a skate competition?
Use speakers, microphones, a mixer, extension cords and power strips sized for the venue layout. Test the full sound system at least 2 hours before competitors arrive and keep spare cables or a backup microphone available.
