What to Buy for a Sea Swim Race
A sea swim race needs more than buoys and race numbers. You also need equipment that stays usable around salt water, clear systems for volunteers, and enough shelter, power and refreshments for people waiting on shore. Use the linked plan for the full list of 50 items, then check quantities against your swimmer count and volunteer team. Buy or reserve safety equipment first, because replacement options may be limited close to race day.

Tips
- Allow at least one race number, bib strap and reusable cup per swimmer, plus 10% extra for damaged, lost or late-added items. Keep spare bibs and straps dry and separate from the registration table.
- Plan one waterproof walkie-talkie for each key post, such as race control, the start, the finish and the safety team. Test every unit in the actual area at least 24 hours before the race.
- Provide one life ring and one life jacket at every designated shore safety point, and confirm the lifeboat reservation no later than 7 days before the event. These items should be accessible without crossing the swimmer flow.
- For a race lasting several hours, prepare at least 2 litres of drinking water per volunteer and participant support person, then add extra for hot weather. Use coolers and water jugs so drinks remain available away from the main refreshment table.
- Check extension cords, power strips, rechargeable work lights and the mobile sound system the evening before. Keep electrical connections under the party tents and bring enough cable length to avoid walkways and wet areas.
Frequently asked questions
- What do I need to buy for a sea swim race?
- You need race equipment such as competition buoys, lane ropes, race bibs, stopwatches and whistles, plus safety gear including life rings, life jackets and waterproof communication equipment. The complete plan contains 50 items, including shelter, tables, refreshments and power supplies.
- How many race numbers and bib straps should I order?
- Order one race number and one bib strap for every registered swimmer, plus at least 10% spares. For 100 swimmers, that means 110 numbers and 110 straps so late changes or damaged items do not delay registration.
- How much drinking water is needed for a sea swim race?
- Budget at least 2 litres per volunteer and support person for the event, with additional water for swimmers and hot weather. For 20 volunteers, start with 40 litres and increase the amount if they will be on site for more than 4 hours.
- When should I reserve the lifeboat and swim safety equipment?
- Reserve the lifeboat, swim floats and other specialist safety equipment at least 7 days before race day. Confirm the reservations again 48 hours before the event, after checking the weather forecast and the sea-weather procedure.
