School camp shopping list

A school camp needs more than tents and sleeping bags. Plan the equipment, kitchen supplies and serving items around the number of children, guides and camp days. Count shared items separately from personal kit, and add a small reserve for breakages, spills and changing weather. Buy chilled food last, store it cold immediately, and label luggage and storage boxes before departure so setup does not become a search exercise.

Tips

  • Plan one sleeping mat and sleeping bag per child, plus a separate set for every guide. Add one or two spare blankets and cushions for children who arrive without suitable bedding.
  • Provide one reusable cup, plate, bowl, knife, fork and spoon per person, then add at least 10% extra. Shared serving spoons are easy to overlook, especially when several groups eat at once.
  • Match cooking equipment to the largest meal, not the average one. Check that your cooking pots, frying pans, cutting boards, kitchen knives, colanders and mixing bowls can handle the full group without repeated cooking rounds.
  • Give each tent a waterproof storage box or clearly labelled luggage area. Pack one flashlight or headlamp per child and guide, and keep at least two spare lights available for lost batteries or late-night checks.
  • Shop for fresh products as close to departure as possible, ideally within 24 hours. Keep chilled food in coolers until it can be stored safely, and bring enough waste bins and bags for every meal and activity area.

Frequently asked questions

How many camping items do I need per child for a school camp?

How many flashlights should we pack for school camp?
Pack one flashlight or headlamp for every child and guide. Keep at least two spare lights, plus spare batteries if the model requires them, in the first-aid or equipment box.
When should I buy food for a school camp?
Buy fresh and chilled food within 24 hours of departure whenever possible. Load it into coolers just before leaving and keep it chilled until the cooking team is ready to use it.
How much extra tableware should I buy for a school camp?
Count one complete place setting per person and add 10% extra. For example, a group of 40 needs 44 cups, plates, bowls and sets of knives, forks and spoons.
