School camp shopping list
Use this school camp shopping list to organise what needs to be bought, packed or checked before departure. Plan food separately for the full group, including dietary requirements, then divide supplies into kitchen, sleeping and activity crates. Refrigerated products should be bought as late as possible, while tents, sleeping mats, sleeping bags and cooking equipment can be checked and packed earlier. The quantities below should be adjusted to the number of pupils, adults and nights.

Tips
- Plan one reusable cup, plate, bowl and full set of cutlery per person, plus at least 10% extra for misplaced or dirty items. Keep serving platters and serving spoons separate from each personβs tableware.
- For cooking, allow one large cooking pot or pan for each dish being prepared at the same time. Check gas burners, gas cylinders, kettles, thermos flasks and coolers before shopping; replacing missing fuel or cooling space at the last minute is difficult.
- Count one sleeping mat and sleeping bag per camper and adult, then add a small reserve if the group can share tents. Pack blankets and cushions according to the overnight temperature, and do not leave eye masks until departure day if children need them for early summer mornings.
- Buy refrigerated products within 24 hours of leaving and keep them in coolers with enough ice packs for the journey and first meal. Pack non-perishable stock earlier in labelled storage crates so it cannot be confused with activity materials.
- Allow one waste bin for each main eating or cooking area and bring extra bin bags for every camp day. Folding tables, chairs or picnic benches, clothes racks and storage crates are easy to overlook because they are not part of the food shop, so check them during the equipment inventory.
Frequently asked questions
- What food should I buy for a school camp?
- Plan every meal, snack and drink for the full number of pupils and adults, then add about 10% for seconds and unexpected changes. Check dietary requirements and medical information before buying, and purchase refrigerated products within 24 hours of departure.
- How many sleeping bags and mats do I need for a school camp?
- Bring one sleeping bag and one sleeping mat for every person staying overnight, including supervisors. Add one or two spare sets for a larger group, damaged equipment or unexpected helpers, and check sizes before packing.
- How much tableware is needed per camper?
- Provide one reusable cup, plate, bowl, fork, knife and spoon per person, plus at least 10% extra. If washing facilities are limited, plan a second set per person or schedule washing after each meal.
- When should I pack and buy school camp supplies?
- Check tents, cooking equipment, sleeping gear and activity materials 3β7 days before departure. Pack non-perishable items at least 1 day beforehand, and buy chilled food and ice packs within 24 hours of leaving.
