Sailing camp shopping list

A sailing camp needs more than boats and sleeping bags. You will need safety equipment for every participant, waterproof storage for clothing and supplies, and enough camping and cooking gear for the full stay. Check what is already included with the sailing location before buying anything. Arrange life jackets, sailing suits, tents and sleeping equipment early, then shop for food and drinks close to departure so chilled items stay fresh.

Tips

  • Plan one correctly fitted life jacket and one whistle for every participant, plus a few spare sizes. Check the fit again when everyone arrives, rather than relying on sizes collected during registration.
  • Use waterproof barrels for spare clothing, food and electronics, and label them by boat or group. Pack each participant’s sleeping bag and sleeping mat separately so luggage can be divided quickly at the campsite.
  • Count tents and sleeping places against the final participant list, including supervisors. Set up the tents before the first night and keep at least one spare dry storage space for wet sailing suits.
  • Buy cooking supplies for the entire stay in one list: cooking pots, gas burners, gas cylinders, coolers and enough table space for meal preparation. Check gas and cooling capacity before shopping for perishable food.
  • Prepare lighting for both the campsite and the boats: one camping lamp per shared tent or cooking area and one headlamp per person. Pack extension cords and power strips only if the venue confirms there is a safe power connection.

Frequently asked questions

What safety equipment do I need for a sailing camp?
Plan one fitted life jacket and one whistle per participant, with spare sizes available. Keep first aid kits, waterproof walkie-talkies, tow lines, mooring lines and basic spare parts accessible before the boats leave.
How many tents and sleeping bags are needed for a sailing camp?
Provide one sleeping bag and one sleeping mat per person, plus enough tents for the planned room and tent layout. Confirm the capacity of each tent and reserve one extra sleeping place if the group size may change.
When should I buy food and drinks for a sailing camp?
Buy shelf-stable food and drinks several days before departure, then purchase chilled items on the day before or the day of departure. Store them in coolers immediately and check that the coolers remain cold during transport.
What should participants bring on a sailing camp?
Tell participants to pack clothing that can get wet, warm layers, sleepwear and a towel in waterproof storage. Send the final packing information at least 3 to 5 days before departure, after permissions, dietary requirements and emergency contacts are complete.
