What you need for a route technology competition
A route technology competition needs more than maps and checkpoints. You will need navigation equipment for each group, clearly numbered posts, materials for practical challenges, and supplies for registration, catering and first aid. Buy or gather the route equipment before you bundle materials by checkpoint, so missing items are found while there is still time to replace them. Use the expected number of teams and checkpoint staff to work out quantities rather than buying one shared set for everyone.

Tips
- Prepare one navigation pack per team, including a compass, topographic map and route booklet. Add spare maps and booklets for damaged or lost copies, especially if teams will work independently.
- Count checkpoint equipment by post before shopping. For example, provide enough pioneer rope, rope ladders, poles, marker flags and measuring tapes for every activity that runs at the same time, not just for the whole event.
- Number every post and prepare a separate bundle for each one. Include the post number, assignment materials, stopwatch and scoring forms so volunteers do not have to search through one large box on the day.
- Plan catering quantities from the registration list and dietary requirements. Have reusable cups, plates, cutlery, coffee pots or thermos flasks, coolers, pitchers and serving trays ready before the registration desk opens.
- Pack a small repair and safety supply with scissors, pliers, spare ribbon and marker flags. Check it at least one day before the competition, alongside the first-aid and emergency materials, because route signs and boundary markers are easy to overlook until setup starts.
Frequently asked questions
- How many compasses do I need for a route technology competition?
- Allow at least one compass per team, so a competition with 12 teams needs 12 working compasses. Keep 2 or 3 spare compasses available for faults, loss or damaged equipment.
- How many route maps should I print?
- Print one topographic map and one route booklet for each team, plus at least 10% spare copies. For 20 teams, prepare 22 map sets and 22 route booklets so replacements are available.
- When should I prepare the checkpoint materials?
- Bundle and label the checkpoint materials at least 24 hours before the event. This gives you time to find missing post numbers, stopwatches, ropes, flags or scoring forms before volunteers arrive.
- What catering equipment is needed for the competition?
- Prepare one reusable cup, plate and complete set of cutlery per expected participant, plus roughly 10% extra. Use coolers for chilled drinks and have coffee pots or thermos flasks ready before the catering point opens.
