What to Buy and Bring for a Pilgrimage

A Pilgrimage needs more than food and water. You will need supplies for the route, rest stops, registration, luggage handling and changing weather. Plan drinks for every participant, plus food that can be served quickly at planned breaks. Route markers, printed maps, name labels and communication equipment are easy to overlook, so gather them before the start day rather than during setup.

Tips

  • Plan at least 2 reusable cups and 2 plates or bowls per participant if washing up during the route is not practical. Bring serving spoons and water jugs for each main rest stop.
  • For drinks, allow 2 to 3 servings per person during the first hour, then refill water regularly at every rest area. Use coolers for chilled drinks and thermos flasks for hot options.
  • Prepare route supplies before leaving: place arrows on wooden stakes, pack cable ties and barrier tape, and protect printed maps with waterproof covers. Bring enough markers for every turn plus a small spare set.
  • Give each participant a name label and wristband at registration, and print one route map per person or group. Keep the participant list with the registration materials so dietary requirements are easy to check.
  • Pack for a change in weather even when the forecast looks clear. Disposable ponchos, flashlights, spare batteries and power banks should be ready before departure, not added after the group has started.

Frequently asked questions

What food should I buy for a Pilgrimage?
Buy easy-to-serve food such as fruit and bread for the planned rest stops, and match the quantities to the confirmed participant count. Prepare the food before departure so it can be served as soon as the group arrives.
How much water and drink do I need for a Pilgrimage?
Start with 2 to 3 drinks per person for the first hour, then provide refills at each rest stop. Bring water jugs for serving and coolers if drinks need to stay cold.
How many route maps and signs do I need?
Print one route map per participant or walking group, plus at least 10% extra copies for loss or damage. Mark every turn and decision point, and pack spare arrows, stakes and cable ties for last-minute repairs.
What should I bring if the Pilgrimage runs into the evening?
Bring one flashlight per route team, spare batteries and charged power banks for phones. Add LED lamps or string lights at rest areas, and check all lighting at least 2 hours before the group arrives.
