What to Buy for a Pilgrimage

A pilgrimage needs more than food and water. You also need clear route materials, visible markers, weather protection, and supplies for registration and rest stops. This shopping list covers the practical items for guiding participants, serving drinks, handling rain, and responding to minor injuries. Plan quantities around your participant list, route length, and number of rest areas, then buy or collect everything several days before the walk.

Tips

  • Plan at least 2–3 reusable cups per participant if washing cups during the day is not possible. Bring extra coffee cups and enough thermos flasks to serve drinks at the start and each rest stop.
  • Prepare one waterproof route map per participant, plus 10% extra. Pack route arrows, barrier tape, and pens separately so volunteers can mark the route and replace signs quickly.
  • For a group walk, provide one reflective vest for every route marshal and keep at least two flashlights and one rechargeable walkie-talkie at the start point. Check batteries and charging cables the day before.
  • Pack one first aid kit at the start and another at the rest area when the route has separate support points. Add emergency blankets and keep emergency numbers on paper as well as on a charged phone.
  • Buy or collect rain ponchos and umbrellas before checking the final weather forecast, not after it changes. If the walk continues after dark, arrange LED lamps, string lights, or flashlights before setting up tables and tents.

Frequently asked questions

How much water do I need for a pilgrimage?
Plan about 0.5 to 0.75 litres of water per person for every 3–4 hours of walking, with extra for warm weather. Add a reserve of at least 10% and divide it between the start and rest area.
How many route maps should I print?
Print one waterproof route map per registered participant, plus 10% extra for lost or damaged copies. Keep a few additional maps with the route volunteers and at the registration table.
What first aid supplies are needed for a pilgrimage?
Place one first aid kit at the start and one at the main rest area for a longer route. Include emergency blankets and prepare a written list of emergency numbers at least one day before departure.
When should I buy supplies for a pilgrimage?
Buy non-perishable items and collect equipment 3–7 days before the walk. Chill drinks and pack weather-sensitive materials the day before, after checking the forecast and final participant count.
