What you need for an omnium race

An omnium race needs more than bikes and a track. You will need equipment for timing and results, clear race and crowd signage, rider identification, volunteer communication, and a reliable setup for refreshments and changing areas. Check power, printing and spare equipment early: these are often left until race morning, when there is no time to replace them. Use this list to buy or gather the essentials before registration closes and the start list is published.

Tips

  • Prepare at least one printed copy of the start list, race schedule and rules for officials, volunteers and the registration desk. Keep digital copies on a laptop or tablet as a backup.
  • Test the timing system, printer, microphones and speakers at least one day before the race. Pack spare cables, extension cords, power strips and fully charged power banks rather than checking them for the first time on site.
  • Bring bib or race numbers with a few extras for replacements. Sort them into participant folders after registration so riders are not delayed when starter groups are assigned.
  • Allow one drinking glass per person for a serving round, plus a small reserve, and bring separate coffee cups, plates and cutlery if food is being served. Fill coolers before the venue opens, not after the first riders arrive.
  • Plan for wet weather and crowd movement with party tents, barrier tape, cones and crowd barriers. Put waste bins, clothes racks and changing-room supplies in place during setup so the track inspection is not interrupted.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for an omnium race?
You need a timing system, laptop or tablets, printer, race numbers, bib numbers, cones, barrier tape and crowd barriers. Add microphones, speakers, walkie-talkies and a megaphone if officials and volunteers need to communicate across the venue.
How many race numbers should I buy for an omnium race?
Prepare one complete number set for every registered rider, plus at least 5–10% extra for lost, damaged or incorrectly assigned numbers. Finalise the quantity after registration closes and the start list is checked.
How early should I prepare the omnium race equipment?
Collect materials and test timing, printing and audio equipment at least 24 hours before the race. Complete the track inspection and physical setup on the day, allowing at least 2 hours before the first start.
What should I bring for food and drinks at an omnium race?
Bring reusable drinking glasses, coffee cups, plates, cutlery, serving platters and coffee pots, along with enough refreshments for the registered riders, volunteers and officials. Confirm dietary requirements before shopping and keep chilled items in filled coolers until serving.
