What to Bring for a Night Dive

A night dive needs more than standard scuba gear. You need reliable lights, clear surface marking, communication equipment and a way to keep people warm before and after the dive. This shopping list covers the equipment and supplies to prepare for the dive, including food, drinks and basic site setup. Check quantities against your group size, buddy pairs and the equipment included in your rental reservation.

Tips

  • Bring at least one primary dive light per diver and one spare light for every two divers. Pack headlamps and LED lanterns as well, so people can move safely around the changing and briefing areas.
  • Prepare one surface marker buoy, reel line and dive flag for each planned dive group, then add a spare set if the site or conditions make recovery difficult. Keep the signalling equipment accessible rather than buried in a vehicle.
  • Allow one filled cylinder, BCD, regulator, mask, fins, exposure suit, weight belt and computer for each diver. Check rental quantities at least 48 hours before the dive so missing sizes or equipment can still be corrected.
  • Pack an emergency setup that includes one first-aid kit, an oxygen kit for diving accidents, rescue blankets and at least two radios or other communication devices. Test the radios and lights before leaving for the site.
  • Plan two to three drinks per person for the first hour, plus hot drinks in thermos flasks after the dive. Use coolers and ice packs for food and drinks, and bring enough cutting and serving equipment for the full group.
