What to bring for a navigation workshop
A navigation workshop needs more than compasses and maps. You will also need clear route materials, visible checkpoint markers, shelter, lighting and a simple refreshment setup. Plan quantities around your number of participants: provide one compass, one pencil and one route booklet or map set per person, plus spare materials for breakages and late registrations. Pack safety equipment separately so it is easy to reach at the route checkpoints and information point.

Tips
- Prepare one complete navigation pack per participant: a compass, topographic map, route booklet, route card holder, pencil, eraser and ruler. Add at least 10% spare pencils and printed materials for losses or last-minute registrations.
- Bring enough route markers to make checkpoints visible in poor weather. Keep marking tape and reflective route arrows in separate storage crates, with waterproof document sleeves protecting instructions and checkpoint sheets.
- Allow one folding table for registration and information, plus additional worktables for map preparation. Take tablecloths, storage crates and folding chairs, and set up the information point before participants arrive.
- Pack safety gear where it can be reached quickly: at least one first aid kit at the information point, whistles for route leaders, safety vests for checkpoint staff and emergency blankets for outdoor incidents.
- For a morning session, prepare hot drinks before registration opens. Use a coffee maker, kettles, cooking stoves, thermos flasks, coolers and extension equipment, and bring LED lanterns, flashlights and power banks if the route may continue into low light.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment does each person need for a navigation workshop?
- Give each participant one compass, one map or route booklet, one route card holder and one pencil. Add an eraser and ruler where participants will plot or measure routes, and keep at least 10% extra supplies available.
- How many maps and route booklets should I print?
- Prepare one complete map and route booklet set per registered participant, then print 10% extra. For 20 participants, that means 22 sets, allowing for damaged copies and late arrivals.
- What safety equipment should a navigation workshop have?
- Have at least one first aid kit at the information point and a second kit if the route has separate sections. Provide whistles for route leaders, safety vests for checkpoint staff and emergency blankets for outdoor emergencies.
- When should I buy and pack the workshop supplies?
- Buy consumable materials and refreshments at least 2 to 3 days before the workshop. Check compasses, flashlights, power banks and cooking equipment the day before, then pack route and safety materials in labelled crates before setup begins.
