What You Need for a Mud Run

A mud run needs more than obstacles and mud. You need clear course markers, sturdy barriers, water for participants, registration supplies and equipment that volunteers can manage safely. This shopping list covers the practical items to arrange before race day, including bib numbers, safety pins, radios, drinking water and finish-line supplies. Buy or reserve the items early, then check every piece of equipment during the course inspection and obstacle test.

Tips

  • Plan one registration setup with a desk, bib numbers, safety pins and storage bins. Keep spare pins and blank bibs available for late registrations or damaged numbers.
  • Provide drinking water at the start, finish and any planned water station. Use water jerry cans and dispensers so volunteers can refill supplies without carrying open containers across the course.
  • Secure every temporary course feature with sturdy ground pegs, barrier tape or crowd-control barriers. Check the fixings again after rain, especially around mud pits, water tubs and climbing obstacles.
  • Prepare one communication point for volunteers with walkie-talkies, whistles and stopwatches. Charge or test the radios before participants arrive and assign a backup person for each key section of the course.
  • Keep participant medals and starter packs in plastic storage bins until they are needed. Store them under party tents or another dry cover so mud and rain do not damage the supplies.

Frequently asked questions

How much drinking water do I need for a mud run?
Plan at least 0.5 litres per participant for the event, plus extra for volunteers and hot weather. Divide the supply between the start, finish and any course water stations rather than keeping it all in one place.
How many volunteers and walkie-talkies do I need for a mud run?
Assign at least one volunteer to registration, each major obstacle area, the start, the finish and the first-aid point. Provide one walkie-talkie for every key course section and keep at least 2 spare radios available.
When should I buy mud run supplies?
Order specialist equipment, medals, bib numbers and printed signs at least 3 to 4 weeks before the event. Buy drinks, water and other consumables during the final week, then chill the drinks the day before.
What should I bring for mud run registration?
Bring a registration desk, bib numbers, safety pins, participant information and plastic storage bins. Prepare supplies at least 1 hour before registration opens, with spare bibs and pins set aside for changes.
