What to Buy for a Motorhome Camping Weekend

A motorhome camping weekend needs more than food and fuel. Plan for shared meals, changing weather, outdoor seating, campsite lighting and guests arriving at different times. This shopping list covers the practical supplies for cooking, eating, sleeping, washing up and setting up a shared camping area. Check your participant numbers before shopping, then separate chilled food, dry goods and equipment so loading and arrival setup are easier.

Tips

  • Plan roughly two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then one drink per person per hour. Add extra water for cooking, washing hands and hot-weather conditions.
  • Allow one plate, cup and set of cutlery per person, plus at least 10% extra for breakages and late arrivals. Pack bottle openers where the shared kitchen can reach them.
  • For each camping place, provide a ground tarp, tent pegs, guy ropes, a sleeping mat and a blanket. Pack spare pegs and at least two extra lanterns because small camping items are often left behind or misplaced.
  • Use one cooler for drinks and another for food if possible. Chill perishable food before departure and pack enough ice packs to keep both coolers cold through the first day.
  • Set up one kitchen station with gas burners, gas cylinders, large pots, pans, cutting boards and serving spoons. Check the gas supply before leaving and bring separate barbecue tools if a barbecue is planned.

Frequently asked questions

How much food do I need for a motorhome camping weekend?
Plan three main meals per person for each full day, plus breakfast and snacks. Add around 10% extra portions if attendance may change or some guests arrive without confirming dietary requirements.
How many camping chairs and plates should I bring?
Bring one chair and one complete place setting per registered participant, plus 10% spare. For 20 people, that means at least 22 chairs, plates, cups and sets of cutlery.
When should I buy food for a motorhome camping weekend?
Buy dry goods and drinks two to three days before departure. Buy chilled and frozen food the day before, then load coolers as close to departure as possible so they stay cold during travel.
How many coolers and ice packs do I need?
Use at least two coolers for a group weekend: one for drinks and one for food. Allow roughly one large ice pack per cooler compartment and prepare extra packs if travel or setup will take more than four hours.
