What you need for a motocross competition
A motocross competition needs more than bikes and a track. This shopping list covers the practical items for the starting area, course marking, timing, rider identification, spectator safety, officials and refreshments. Plan separate supplies for the track crew, medical team, riders and audience so essential equipment does not get used up elsewhere. Check quantities after registrations close, then buy disposable items and food close enough to race day to keep them fresh.

Tips
- Prepare one bib number for every registered rider, plus at least 10 spare numbers for replacements, late changes or damaged bibs. Keep the final start list with the registration desk and officials.
- Allow roughly 2β3 drinks per person for the first hour, then 1β2 per person for each additional hour. Add extra water for riders, medical staff and track workers, who need more than spectators.
- Use enough cones, barrier tape, course signs and crowd barriers to separate the racing line, paddock, parking route and spectator areas. Walk the full course before race day and replace missing or damaged markers.
- Keep first aid kits, emergency blankets, fire extinguishers, safety vests, hearing protection and flashlights in clearly marked locations. Do not leave these supplies boxed up in a vehicle once the event starts.
- Set aside spare parts, scoops, rakes and measuring tapes for track maintenance rather than general use. A small maintenance station near the course saves time between heats when a bend or obstacle needs attention.
Frequently asked questions
- What should I buy for a motocross competition?
- Plan for rider identification, timing, track maintenance, safety, crowd control, communication and catering. Core items include bib numbers, transponders, transponder mats, flags, cones, barriers, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, a sound system and refreshments.
- How many drinks do I need for a motocross race day?
- Use 2β3 drinks per person for the first hour and 1β2 more for every additional hour. Add a separate allowance for riders, medical staff and volunteers, especially during warm weather or a long programme.
- How many spare motocross bib numbers should I order?
- Order one bib number per registered rider and keep at least 10 spare numbers available. If more than 100 riders are registered, increase the spare stock to around 10% of the field.
- When should I buy supplies for a motocross competition?
- Buy durable safety, course and timing equipment at least 1β2 weeks before the event so you can test and replace missing items. Buy food and chilled drinks 1β2 days beforehand, then chill them before the gates open.
