What to Buy for a Men’s Run
A men’s run needs more than bib numbers and medals. You’ll need supplies for registration, route marking, traffic control, communication, timing and the finish area. Use the quantities in your plan to match the number of runners, volunteers and route stations. Buy or collect disposable items early, then check powered equipment and printed materials at least one day before the run.

Tips
- Prepare one bib number and at least two safety pins per runner, plus a small reserve for replacements. Pack numbers in registration order so check-in does not become a queue.
- Allow one route arrow or sign for every change of direction, junction or marshal point. Sort the signs by route section before race day and keep spare fixing materials with them.
- Count safety vests, whistles and walkie-talkies by volunteer position, not just by team. Charge every radio, vest and phone the evening before, and bring charging stations or power strips where needed.
- Plan the finish area before shopping: medals, medal ribbons, tables, chairs, waste bins and a speaker or megaphone must be ready when the first runner arrives. Keep medals in finish order if different categories are used.
- Print the participant list, bib numbers and volunteer instructions before the event day. Bring a laptop, printer, extension cords and power strips only if you have confirmed a reliable power point at the start or finish.
Frequently asked questions
- How many safety pins do I need for a men’s run?
- Plan on 2 safety pins per runner, plus 10% extra for lost or damaged pins. For 100 runners, that means 220 pins.
- How many route signs should I buy for a running event?
- Use at least 1 arrow or route sign at every turn, junction and unclear section, then add 10% spare signs. Walk the route once after marking it to find gaps before race day.
- When should I print race numbers and participant lists?
- Print them 1 to 2 days before the run, after registrations are processed. Keep a small batch of blank or spare numbers for late changes and replacements.
- How early should race-day equipment be charged?
- Charge walkie-talkies, safety lights and other powered equipment the evening before, at least 8 hours ahead. Test each device and pack spare batteries or a charging station before leaving for the start area.
