What you need for a longboard competition

A longboard competition needs more than boards and a marked course. You’ll need timing and finish equipment, protective gear for riders, reliable communication, power for the registration and sound setup, and a practical drinks station. This shopping list covers the physical supplies to buy, borrow or bring. Check quantities against your number of riders, starter groups, volunteers and spectators before ordering, especially for helmets, protective pads, cups and cooling capacity.

Tips

  • Plan at least one longboard, helmet and complete set of knee, elbow and wrist protection for every rider who needs to borrow equipment. Add a few spare sizes so registration is not delayed by missing or poorly fitting gear.
  • Use two independent timing options at the finish, such as stopwatches plus a written results sheet on a laptop. Test the stopwatches, printer and power supplies at least one day before the competition.
  • Bring enough walkie-talkies for the starter, finish, course marshals and event coordinator. Charge them fully the evening before and pack power banks for positions where mains power is unavailable.
  • Match your drinks and cup supply to the schedule rather than the venue capacity. A reusable cup per attendee, coolers for chilled drinks and separate coffee cups prevent queues when riders return from a heat.
  • Do a full equipment check 24 hours before setup: starting gates, finishing cloth, measuring tapes, microphones, extension cords and LED work lights are easy to overlook and difficult to replace on competition day.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a longboard competition?
At minimum, plan for longboards, starting gates, a finishing cloth, stopwatches and measuring tapes. You will also need helmets and protective pads, plus tables, chairs, communication equipment and a sound system for a properly managed event.
How many helmets and protective pads should I buy?
Provide one helmet and one complete set of knee, elbow and wrist protection for each rider who does not bring their own. Add at least 10% spare equipment, rounded up to the next whole item, to cover different sizes and last-minute damage.
How many walkie-talkies are needed for a longboard race?
Plan for one walkie-talkie at the start, one at the finish, one for each key course marshal and one for the event coordinator. For a small course this usually means 5 to 8 units; add one spare if the course is spread out.
When should I buy supplies for a longboard competition?
Order specialist equipment and protective gear at least 2 to 3 weeks before the event. Buy drinks, disposable or reusable serving supplies and other consumables 2 to 4 days beforehand, then chill the drinks on the day before or the morning of the competition.
