What you need for a Klaverjas evening

A Klaverjas evening needs more than card decks and tables. You need one complete playing setup for each table, spare pens and score sheets, plus a simple drinks and snack station that can keep running between rounds. Buy or collect the game materials first, then check coffee equipment, serving items, cooling, power and waste bins. This list helps you avoid the supplies that are often forgotten until players have already arrived.

Tips

  • Plan one Klaverjas card deck, score pad and pen per playing table, plus at least one spare deck, two spare score pads and four extra pens. Keep round cards and calculators at the registration desk or with the match schedule.
  • Allow two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then about one drink per person for each following hour. Chill drinks before guests arrive and keep a cooler available if the bar refrigerator is too small.
  • For coffee and tea, prepare at least one cup per guest for the first serving and keep extra coffee cups, sugar bowls, milk jugs, coffee thermoses and teapots ready. Check that the coffee machines and kettles can run safely from the available power strips and extension cords.
  • Match tableware to the food and drinks: provide one glass, plate and cutlery set per guest, then add roughly 10 percent extra. Serving bowls and serving platters should be ready before snacks are put out, not fetched during the first round.
  • Set aside one registration desk, name badges and pens for arrivals, and place waste bins near the buffet and playing area. Table lamps are useful when card tables are not evenly lit; check them before setting out the cards.

Frequently asked questions

How many Klaverjas card decks do I need?
Use one deck for each playing table and bring at least one spare deck. For example, six tables require seven decks so a damaged or missing card does not stop a round.
How many score pads and pens are needed for a Klaverjas evening?
Prepare one score pad and one pen per table, plus two spare score pads and four extra pens. For eight tables, that means 10 score pads and at least 12 pens.
How much food and drink should I buy for a Klaverjas evening?
Allow two to three drinks per person during the first hour and one more per person for every following hour. For snacks, plan around 150 to 200 grams per person for a three- to four-hour evening, depending on whether a meal is served.
When should I chill the drinks and prepare the coffee supplies?
Chill drinks at least four hours before guests arrive, or the evening before if there is limited cooling space. Check coffee machines, kettles, cups, sugar and milk at least one day ahead, then prepare the first coffee and tea service before registration opens.
