What you need for an ice skating competition
An ice skating competition needs more than skates and a rink. This shopping list covers the practical items for registration, race control, judging, announcements, refreshments and the awards ceremony. Plan equipment for every official station, plus spares for anything that can fail during the event. Buy or gather disposable and serving supplies before the final registration check, when participant numbers and dietary requirements are confirmed.

Tips
- Prepare one bib number and one race bib strap for every competitor, then add at least 10% spare sets for late changes, damage or unreadable numbers.
- Give each judge and timekeeper the equipment they need at their station. Keep spare marker discs, pens and a stopwatch together in the competition folders so officials do not have to leave the rink.
- Count cones, finish flags, round signs and round counters against the number of race categories and starter groups. Pack each race setup separately so volunteers can place it without sorting items rink-side.
- Test the sound system, wireless microphones and speakers at least 24 hours before the competition. Bring enough extension cords, power strips and rechargeable batteries for every powered station, plus one charged spare set.
- Buy refreshments only after registrations and dietary requirements are checked. As a starting point, allow 2β3 drinks per person for the first hour, then add separate coffee cups, plates and cutlery for the food service.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for an ice skating competition?
- You need bib numbers and straps, cones, marker discs, finish flags, a starter pistol, whistles, round signs, a stopwatch, round counters and hand bells. Also prepare a sound system, microphones, speakers, power supplies and medical cold packs.
- How many race bibs should I buy?
- Prepare one bib and one strap for each registered competitor, plus at least 10% extra. For 80 skaters, that means 88 bibs and 88 straps so you can cover replacements and last-minute changes.
- How much drink and tableware do I need for the event?
- Allow 2β3 drinks per person for the first hour, then adjust for the expected duration and weather. Provide one reusable cup per guest, with separate coffee cups, plates and cutlery for anyone serving or eating food.
- When should I test the competition equipment?
- Test the sound system, microphones, speakers and rechargeable batteries at least 24 hours before the competition. Pack and label race equipment the day before, and do a final check after registrations close.
