How to organise an architecture walk
An architecture walk needs more than a list of interesting buildings. Start by fixing the route, the number of stops and the walking time, then work backwards from the event date for permissions, reservations, guides and invitations. Check the full route on foot before inviting people, including crossings, narrow pavements and places to pause. On the day, clear directions, name stickers, route maps and a short guide briefing prevent small delays from affecting the whole group.

Tips
- Keep the route to a manageable number of highlights and allow about 10 minutes at each stop, plus time for the group to move and regroup. A route that looks short on a map can take much longer with explanations and crossings.
- Walk the complete route at least one week before the event and check it again after bad weather or roadworks. Note safe meeting points, toilets, places to pause and any section where the group may split.
- Set a registration deadline at least 3 days before the walk so you can confirm attendance, collect dietary requirements and prepare the participant list. Send the meeting point, start time and cancellation instructions with the invitation.
- Brief each guide no later than the day before and give them the final route, stop order and speaking notes. Check the architecture information against reliable sources before printing leaflets or preparing signs.
- Prepare the arrival point before participants come: sort name stickers and wristbands, print one route map per person plus a few spares, and set out drinks and catering. Chill drinks in advance and test any portable sound equipment before the first explanation.
Frequently asked questions
- How long should an architecture walk be?
- Allow 90 minutes to 2.5 hours for a comfortable walk, depending on the number of stops and the pace of the group. Plan roughly 10 minutes of explanation per highlight, plus walking and regrouping time.
- When should I send invitations for an architecture walk?
- Send invitations 3 to 4 weeks before the event, especially if reservations or a guide are involved. Close registrations about 3 days beforehand so you can confirm participants and prepare materials.
- Do I need permission to organise an architecture walk?
- Check permits, notifications and access requirements at least 4 weeks before the walk. You may need extra arrangements if the route uses private property, restricted buildings, amplified sound or a large gathering point.
- How many people should join an architecture walk?
- Choose a group size that can hear the guide and stay together at crossings; many walks work best with about 10 to 20 people per guide. For a larger group, use additional guides or divide participants into smaller groups.
