How to organise a pétanque tournament that runs on time

Start by fixing the tournament format, number of players and available courts before sending invitations. The format determines how many matches you need, how long the day will run and how many pétanque sets, scoreboards and volunteers are required. Confirm dietary requirements during registration, then publish the schedule and rules before the event. On the day, leave enough time to inspect the site, mark the playing fields, set up registration and prepare drinks before the first match.

Tips

  • Set the format before opening registration. With 24 players, decide whether you will run 12 doubles teams, rotating pairs or a knockout, then calculate the number of courts and match rounds from that choice.
  • Publish rules and start times at least one week before the tournament. Include scoring, match duration, tie-breaks, court assignments and what happens if a player arrives late.
  • Close registrations early enough to build the match schedule. A 48-hour cut-off gives you time to confirm the participant list, assign volunteers, print score sheets and make participant badges.
  • Set up the site in a fixed order on the morning itself: clear obstacles, mark the courts, place measuring tapes and scoreboards, then arrange the registration desk, tables and chairs. Keep a spare court or a clearly defined waiting area for schedule changes.
  • Check weather and refreshments no later than the day before. Put coffee and tea out before the first matches, fill coolers with ice, and use reusable cups so players are not leaving the courts to search for drinks.

Frequently asked questions

How many pétanque courts do I need for a tournament?
Plan one court per match running at the same time. For 24 players in doubles, six courts allow all 12 teams to play in one wave; with three courts, you need two waves and a longer schedule.
How long does a pétanque tournament take?
Allow roughly 45 to 60 minutes per match round, including changeover and score recording. Three rounds therefore need about 3 to 4 hours, before adding registration, breaks and prize-giving.
When should I send the final tournament information?
Send it 5 to 7 days before the event, then send a short reminder 24 hours beforehand. Include the arrival time, first match time, site directions, rules, court format and what participants should bring.
How many pétanque sets do I need for 24 players?
For six simultaneous doubles matches, prepare at least six complete pétanque sets, plus one spare set if possible. Check the sets before setup and keep goal balls, measuring tapes and field markings with the equipment.
