What to Buy for a Horse Cross-Country Event

A horse cross-country event needs more than obstacles and a start line. You will need equipment for marking the route, identifying riders, timing rounds, caring for horses and keeping the registration and judging areas usable. Plan supplies for the full field plus replacements for anything that can be lost, damaged or soaked. Check the course and weather again before event day so you can add shelter, water, feed or ground-marking materials where needed.

Tips

  • Allow at least one clearly visible marker at every turn, crossing and decision point, then keep a spare supply of marker posts and route ribbons for repairs during the day.
  • Prepare one bib or race number for every participant, plus a small reserve for lost or damaged numbers. Keep the numbers at the registration desk with the start list.
  • Provide water troughs and hay or feed troughs at the horse area, and position wheelbarrows, scoops and pitchforks close enough that volunteers can clean without crossing the course.
  • Give the judges a dedicated table, chairs or stools, stopwatches and spare batteries. Test every stopwatch before the first group starts and keep a backup timing method available.
  • Set up party tents over registration and judging tables before participants arrive. Tables, folding chairs and a registration desk are easy to overlook when the course equipment takes priority.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a horse cross-country event?
Plan for cross-country obstacles, a starting gate, a finishing cloth, marker posts, route ribbons, bib or race numbers and stopwatches. You will also need horse water and feed troughs, hay, straw, grooming supplies and cleaning equipment.
How many bib numbers should I buy for a horse cross-country event?
Prepare one bib number per registered participant and add around 5–10% extra for replacements. Print or pack the reserve numbers before registration opens so a missing number does not delay the start.
How much hay and water do horses need at a cross-country event?
Provide fresh water throughout the event and plan enough hay for the full time horses are on site, with extra for delays. Recheck quantities after the final participant list is closed and refill troughs regularly during the day.
When should I buy equipment for a horse cross-country event?
Buy or reserve fixed course equipment and furniture at least 2–4 weeks before the event. Have consumables, bibs, batteries and spare route markers ready several days beforehand, leaving time to replace missing items.
