What to Bring and Buy for Hockey Training

A hockey training session needs more than sticks and balls. You will also need enough cones, bibs and training equipment for the group, plus drinks and simple snacks for the break. Set aside equipment for registration, field marking and first aid before participants arrive. This checklist helps you shop early, prepare the training area and avoid running short on cups, ice packs or refreshments during the session.

Tips

  • Count one hockey stick and one training bib per participant where possible, then add 2–4 spare sticks and 4–6 extra bibs for replacements or late registrations.
  • Plan at least 2–3 reusable drinking cups per participant if cups will not be washed during training. Fill the coolers before participants arrive and keep extra drinks ready for refills.
  • Buy or prepare about 1 piece of fruit and one small snack per participant for the break, plus 10% extra. Serving platters, plates and cutlery should be ready before the warm-up starts.
  • Pack the first aid kit and at least 2 ice packs where the coach can reach them within a minute. Check these supplies the day before, not when the first player is already injured.
  • Test the Bluetooth speaker, extension cords and power strips at least 30 minutes before training. Keep the registration desk, attendance list and printed training program together so check-in does not delay the session.

Frequently asked questions

How many hockey balls do I need for training?
Plan for at least 1 ball per active drill group, with 2–4 spare balls. For example, four groups need around 8–12 balls so a lost ball does not stop the exercise.
How many drinks should I buy for hockey training?
Allow 500–750 ml per participant for a normal training session, plus around 10% extra for warm weather or refills. Chill the drinks and fill the coolers before participants arrive.
What first-aid supplies are needed for hockey training?
Keep one fully stocked first aid kit and at least 2 ice packs at the field. Check them 24 hours beforehand and replace anything used or expired before the session.
When should I prepare the hockey training equipment?
Check sticks, balls, goals, cones and nets the day before. Mark out the field and set up the registration table, speaker and refreshments at least 30 minutes before the start.
