What you need for a fox hunt
A fox hunt needs more than fox masks and a route. You will also need clear team paperwork, visible route markers, equipment for each fox station and practical supplies for supervisors. Buy or gather everything early enough to pack each station separately and test the route before the event. This list helps you check the physical materials, food and drinks needed for a smooth start, safe search and easy scoring.

Tips
- Prepare one clipboard, map, score sheet and working pen for every team, plus at least 10% extra pens and printed sheets for replacements.
- Pack each fox station in its own storage box or bag with its task cards, markers, stopwatch and any measuring tape, rope or chalk it needs. Prepare these packs at least one day before the hunt.
- Give every supervisor a reflective vest and a reliable way to communicate. Plan one walkie-talkie or charged phone per key station, and keep at least two power banks available.
- Mark the route with arrows, ribbons or cones that can be seen in daylight, then add flashlights or LED lamps if any station runs after dark. Bring spare batteries or fully charge the lamps before setup.
- Buy drinks for the actual headcount and chill them before guests arrive. Keep a separate first-aid kit and phone list at the start table rather than leaving them in a station box.
Frequently asked questions
- What do I need for a fox hunt?
- You need route maps, team cards, score sheets, pens and clipboards, plus reflective vests, fox masks, task cards and route markers. For the stations, prepare items such as cones, ribbons, rope, chalk, measuring tapes and stopwatches. Also arrange drinks, lighting, a first-aid kit and communication equipment.
- How many maps and score sheets should I print for a fox hunt?
- Print one map and one score sheet per team, then add 10% extra copies. For example, 8 teams need 9 copies of each document. Prepare at least one team card per team as well.
- How many reflective vests do fox hunt supervisors need?
- Provide one vest for every supervisor working on the route or at a fox station, plus 2 spare vests. Count supervisors before shopping, because guests and station staff need to be easy to identify.
- When should I prepare the fox hunt supplies?
- Check the full materials list 3 to 5 days before the event and buy missing items then. Pack the station boxes, print the paperwork and test the lights and walkie-talkies at least 1 day before the hunt.
