What to buy and bring for a flea market

A flea market needs more than tables and things to sell. You also need a clear setup for seller spaces, refreshments, payments, signs and safe movement around the venue. Plan equipment around the number of stalls and visitors, then check power, weather protection and lighting before shopping. This list focuses on the items that are easy to underestimate or arrange too late, including serving equipment, cool storage and payment supplies.

Tips

  • Allow one table or market stall per selling space, plus at least one chair or stool for each seller who needs to sit. Keep a few foldable tables and folding stools available for late changes or sellers bringing extra stock.
  • Provide one card machine and a separate cash float with small notes and coins for the sales desk or organisers. Test the card machine and payment connection at least 24 hours before opening.
  • For a coffee and tea point, prepare one coffee machine or kettle for every 30–40 expected users per serving period. Keep hot drinks in thermos flasks and use water jugs, reusable cups, coffee cups, saucers and cake plates where needed.
  • Use coolers or cool bags for drinks and chilled supplies, and start cooling drinks at least 4 hours before visitors arrive. Bring serving trays, cutting boards, bread knives, serving spoons and tongs so food can be handled without borrowing sellers’ equipment.
  • Make one clearly visible stand-number sign for every selling space, plus direction arrows at entrances and junctions. Check extension cords, power strips, LED lights, string lights and torches the evening before; outdoor stalls may need lighting if setup or packing runs into low light.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to buy for a flea market?
Plan for selling furniture, payment equipment, signs, refreshments and lighting. For each stall, allow a table or market stall, a stand number, and seating if the seller needs it; add coolers, cups and serving equipment for the refreshment point.
How many tables do I need for a flea market?
Start with one table or market stall for each confirmed selling space, then keep 5–10% extra foldable tables if storage allows. This covers late registrations, damaged furniture and sellers who need more display space.
How much coffee and tea should I prepare for a flea market?
Estimate one hot drink per expected visitor during a short morning market, or two per visitor for a market lasting several hours. Prepare the machines and kettles at least 24 hours beforehand and keep batches in thermos flasks.
When should I prepare flea market signs and payment equipment?
Make stand-number signs, arrows and price lists at least 2 days before the event. Test the card machine, extension cords and power strips the day before, and pack cash floats and small change separately before setup starts.
