Fishing day shopping list

A fishing day by the water needs more than rods and bait. Plan equipment for each participant, plus seating, shelter, food, drinks and a way to keep everything cold. Pack spare lines, hooks and floats because small items are easy to lose during the day. Check licenses, access and parking before shopping, and use the weather forecast to decide how much shade, waterproof storage and warm clothing participants may need.

Tips

  • Allow one fishing rod and one complete basic setup per participant, then pack at least 10% extra hooks, floats and lengths of line for breakages and lost tackle.
  • Bring one bait container per fishing spot or small group, with tweezers and scissors packed in a separate, clearly marked kit. This prevents people from searching through shared bags at the water’s edge.
  • For a four-hour session, plan roughly 1 litre of drinks per person, plus 2–3 drinks per person for the first hour if the weather is warm. Chill them in coolers before leaving.
  • Pack one reusable plate, bowl, cup and cutlery set per person, with 10% extra for unexpected guests. Add serving platters, cutting boards, a chef’s knife and barbecue tongs to the food kit.
  • Take shelter and seating for the full group, not just the anglers: one folding chair per person and enough table space for food, drinks, forms and measuring equipment. Pack tablecloths and waterproof storage before loading the vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need for a fishing day with 10 people?
Take 10 fishing rods and basic setups, plus at least 1 spare rod if available. Pack 11 reusable place settings, 11 drinks’ worth of cups, and at least 10 litres of drinks for a four-hour day, with extra water in warm weather.
How much bait and fishing tackle should I buy?
Buy enough bait for every participant’s planned fishing time and pack 10–20% extra for spills or repeat use. For hooks, floats and line, add at least 10% spare items because these are commonly lost or damaged.
How many drinks do I need for a fishing day?
For a four-hour fishing day, allow about 1 litre of drinks per person. In warm weather, start with 2–3 drinks per person for the first hour and keep at least one extra cooler of water available.
What should I pack for a barbecue by the water?
Pack the barbecue, tongs, serving platters, cutting boards, a chef’s knife and coolers, plus one reusable place setting per person. Prepare and chill the drinks before departure, and pack food in sealed containers so it stays clean near the fishing spots.
