Family day trip shopping list

A family day at a day attraction is easier when food, drinks and travel essentials are packed before anyone gets in the car. Plan about 1 litre of water per adult for a full day, plus extra drinks for children and warm weather. Pack the picnic in coolers with ice packs, and keep sun and rain gear within reach rather than buried in the luggage. This list also covers chargers, first aid supplies, child seats and simple games for waiting time or the journey home.

Tips

  • Pack two sandwiches or equivalent lunch portions per adult, one to two child-sized portions per child, and two snacks per person. Prepare the picnic the evening before so the food can be chilled overnight.
  • Take one reusable water bottle per person and fill them before departure. For a warm day, add roughly 500 ml per person to the usual 1-litre estimate and keep spare drinks in the coolers.
  • Put sunscreen, caps, sunglasses and umbrellas in the top of a backpack. Add rain ponchos when the forecast is unsettled; checking the forecast the night before and again before leaving prevents a last-minute shop.
  • Charge phones and power banks to 100% the evening before, then pack the correct charging cables and a car charger. Keep one phone available for the reservation, route details and participant contact.
  • Check child seats, travel documents and any dietary requirements at least 24 hours before departure. Load the coolers last, and use luggage tags or travel document folders so essential items are not misplaced during the day.

Frequently asked questions

What food should I pack for a family day trip?
Pack one main lunch portion and two snacks per adult, with smaller portions for children. Include food for stated dietary requirements, reusable plates, bowls and cups, and keep perishable items in coolers with ice packs.
How much water do we need for a full day out?
Start with about 1 litre per adult and 750 ml per child for a full day. Add around 500 ml per person in hot weather, and bring reusable bottles so you can refill them during the day.
What should I pack for changing weather at a day attraction?
Pack sunscreen, sunglasses and caps for sun, plus one umbrella or rain poncho per person who may need cover. Check the forecast twice: once the evening before and again on the morning of departure.
When should I prepare the shopping and picnic?
Buy non-perishable supplies at least 24 hours before the trip and check the reservation, route and dietary requirements at the same time. Wash produce, prepare sandwiches and chill drinks the evening before, then load the coolers just before leaving.
